ABOUT US & HISTORY

Barrow Hill is 150 years old and still going strong

AN AWARD WINNING RAIL CENTRE CONNECTED TO THE MAIN LINE NETWORK, BARROW HILL IS OVER 150 YEARS OLD AND STILL GOING STRONG

Barrow Hill originally opened its doors as a railway locomotive depot 150 years ago. That milestone was achieved in 2020 and, although hundreds of employees (and a few owners) have ‘come and gone’ over the ages, the guiding principle is still the same:

We service the needs of the rail industry, and can operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Part of the original depot is given up to a magnificent historic Roundhouse, with 24 road turntable, and is the only (working) example of its kind in the UK. The ‘heritage’ side is completely separate to the Commercial company that operates everything, and runs the day to day business.

TODAY & BEYOND

Over 150 years later, we’re still going strong and attracting thousands of visitors to our special events, often featuring working steam and diesel locomotives. Our guiding principles remain the same and with one eye on the future…
